I puffy heart Twilight.  I remember very clearly this time last year, counting down the weeks, then the days until the release of the movie.  I got excited when I ordered the tickets from Fandango.  I was upset at the Hibachi grill my friend and I went to for dinner because they wouldn’t seat us right away, and I worried that we wouldn’t make it to the movie theater in time to see the movie.  It was 4pm.

I also remember getting excited every time I saw the Twilight trailer on TV.  It didn’t get a lot of advertising space at first, but in the last month to 6 weeks before the release I saw the trailers on TV about once every other day or so.  What I certainly didn’t see was any clips from the movie.  The trailer was the biggest sneak peek anyone of us got to see.  Sometimes I could find an extended or theatrical trailer on YouTube (and believe me, I looked), but even that was hard to find.  And when my friend and I were standing in line outside the theater-yes we made it out of the restaurant in plenty of time-we were just as giddy as the teenagers that surrounded us.

newmoonlogoThis year, instead of anticipation and excitement, I have temptation.  Why?  Because Summit Entertainment keeps releasing full length scenes from New Moon!  And it isn’t just regular, run-of-the-mill scenes that they are releasing, it’s pivotal scenes to boot!  It would be one thing if they were showing a few minutes of Bella and Jacob drinking hot soda in the garage while he fixed up his Volkswagen; instead, they are releasing the Birthday Party scene, the Break-Up scene, the first time Jacob morphs into a wolf scene, the Reunion scene in Italy, and a fight scene with the Volturi.  What is wrong with this picture?  There is only one thing missing from that chronological list of scenes: the cliff diving scene.  All they would have to do is release the cliff diving scene and you would actually be able to watch the entire gist of the movie-3 weeks before it’s released in the movie theaters.

Why, Summit, why?  I am so excited about seeing New Moon the day it’s released.  I am pleased as punch that the movie is released on a payday weekend because I plan to see it many times over the first few days.  In fact, I would probably save gas money by pitching a tent in front of the movie theater-and I only live 20 miles away.  I know I’m not the only one this excited about the movie, and I’m in my thirties.  Imagine the lengths the teenagers-the target demographic-will go to in order to see this movie on opening night.  So, what are they hoping to gain by showing us the movie in little snippets before it’s released?

I’m sure there are many of you thinking, “You’ve read the book; you already know what happens.” Yes that is true, I have read New Moon more than a few times, I know exactly how things play out.  But that doesn’t mean I want to see the cinematic interpretation one minute before it’s released.  Watching all of these scenes before the movie is released is akin to opening all of your presents 3 weeks before Christmas.  Sure, it’s exciting, but the anticipation is all gone.  I want to be riveted the entire 2 hours of the movie, and I don’t think that’ll be possible if I have already seen the pivotal scenes in the movie.  If they keep going at this rate, there won’t be any part of the movie left.  And you know that someone out there is downloading all of these clips and stringing them together to make a short movie out of it.

It’s just not right.  Aside from the trailers, movies just aren’t released scene by scene like this.  I’m not knocking anyone who decides to watch them; I completely understand why you do.  But I can’t help but think that opening night won’t be as exciting for you as it will be for those of us who have resisted the temptation.

It’s not that far away.  I can make it.  And I have a feeling that I am going to be glad I waited.

How do you feel about the clips? Have you watched them, or are you saving yourself for the movie? Make sure to tell us what you think in The Lair!
