Wicked Wednesday
Okay tell the truth. Right after the birthday scene, who imagined Carlisle taking Bella right there on that desk in his study? *waves hand frantically * Even the most die-hard canon-shipper has at least one fic in their favorites that is non-canon. What is it about non-canon couples, that has us begging for more?
Seeing as how I’ve only read Twilight fics, I went diving into the bottomless pit that is fanfiction.net to find out what non-canon couples people in other vamp fandoms are reading. And let me tell you! Some were shocking, some had me gagging, and others left me wanting more.
For my first tentative steps outside of Twilight, I started with something familiar: Buffy. I was a die-hard Buffy fan back in the day and I still have the entire series on DVD that I occasionally pull out on a rainy day. After Buffy, I hit the House of Night series, and Vampire Academy series. I’m not a Sookie or Elena fan so I decided to stick with what I know. Here’s what I found, what I liked and what freaked me out.
Buffy/Giles
Okay, just the thought of this one squicked me out, but apparently it’s really popular in the Buffy fandom. I read the first couple of chapters of several fics and just couldn’t get into it. I think it’s the age thing and the fact that I see Anthony Stewart Head when I think of Giles. Even when the producers of the show tried to make Giles have a sexy side, for me it never really worked. Anyone remember his sexy girlfriend, Olivia? Even with the girlfriend I didn’t see Giles as sexy. I could go on and on about these two, because after some research I found out that a relationship stronger than the obvious watcher/ slayer or even father/ daughter was hinted at. Hmm…
Dawn/Spike
I love these two! Before I knew what fanfiction was, I wanted someone to write these two together. I really thought the show would get there eventually, but they kept Dawn’s character so young that it never happened. I found one good fic in my search and even though there is no actual smut it is really good all the same. Since I believe author is underage I’m going to err on the side of caution and not mention it here. Just know that the Dawn/Spike fics I did read were largely believeable.
With the House of Night, lets face it, Zoey Redbird changes boyfriends as often as she changes underwear, so I decided to check out the other characters in the books. What a bust that was. Seriously people, I found one Damian/Erik lemon, and even if the author had decided to use punctuation, it would still be awful. The only other non-canon pairing was Zoey/Aphrodite, which I thought would have potential but I was disappointed. I think that even though Zoey is a bit of a whore, the fan-base for HoN is just too young for any decent smut.
Vampire Academy? Non-canon? Nothing unless you count Adrian as non-canon and I don’t think we can totally cut Adrian out of the picture yet. At least that’s what I think.
And last but not least, Twilight.
Edward/Jasper
I think most of you know I have a little (for little, read “unhealthy”) obsession with Edward/Jasper. I think that they make a way better couple than Edward/Bella. The majority of the E/J fics I have read put Jasper as the more assertive one in the relationship and that is what I think draws me in. Canon Edward for me is too overbearing, so to see him taken down a notch, or even subservient, makes me weak in the knees.
Jasper/Bella
I think I just might have a Jasper fetish. I like these two together. The fact that Jasper has no problem sleeping with Bella, even though he has issues with bloodlust makes Edward’s struggle seem insignificant and almost comical. But I might be biased because J is from Texas.
As far as everyone else is concerned, I love all the non-canon couples. The only one’s I refuse to read are Renessmee with either Bella or Edward, because the whole incest thing is just wrong. And for some odd reason I can’t handle Esme/Edward even if they are human or not related in any way. I don’t know why, I just can’t.
I asked our Wicked Wednesday author for this week, SusanAshlea, what she thought of non-canon couples as I interviewed her. Here is what she had to say.
me: I’m writing about non-canon couples this week. Who are your fave non-canon couples?
SusanAshlea: Obviousy, Jasper/Bella! lol I think J/B is my favorite non-canon pairing, mostly because I really enjoy Jasper’s character and his backstory the most. If Bella hadn’t fallen for Edward, and Alice didn’t exist, they’d be perfect for each other. However, I also read a fanfic called “Past & Present” by giveusakiss413. In it, Bella and Carlisle have an interesting past & their relationship is very different. It’s hard to explain but I really like what the author did with it. It was sort of a chaste relationship where they went back and forth wanting more out of the relationship and not being able to have it.
me: What about any of the other vamp fandoms. Any favorite non-canon couples?
SusanAshlea: I enjoy Damon/Elena from Vampire Diaries. In the books, he was so intent on seducing her, and he’s just so dang sexy! In HoN, I like Zoey/Stark, though there is no telling where that whole series could go…so I don’t know if that would be considered non-canon. And I might be the only person alive that wishes Sookie would just get it on with Sam already.
me: You’re our author this week, tell us about your one-shot.
SusanAshlea: It is an outtake from my story, Finding Forever. The story is about Felix and a human American exchange student that he meets in Volterra. They have been doe-eyed about their feelings for each other for awhile, and I felt they needed to take their relationship to the “next level”, but I wanted to keep the story rated PG-13 so I decided to write an outtake.
me: What made you want to write about a secondary character such as Felix.
SusanAshlea: I got the inspiration when I was reading “When Darkness Turns to Light” by Jana Banana last winter. Near the end, the characters find themselves in Volterra for an extended period of time, and I loved the interaction Felix had with the humans. He was still a vampire, but a very noble character. When I was reading the Twilight Series, I enjoyed the parts with the Volturi because they seemed so mysterious. So, the wheels in my brain got to turning, and after I finished my first multi-chapter fic, I couldn’t let go of the idea of Felix falling for a human girl…so Finding Forever was born.
me: Do you write for any fandoms other than Twilight?
SusanAshlea: Not yet. This weekend that should change. I am formulating a HoN fic as we speak.
me: Ooh! That’s exciting!
SusanAshlea: But my story is going to be all-human…I think. I can do it either way.
me: That would be an interesting twist! So, what were your thoughts about New Moon?
SusanAshlea: I really really enjoyed it. I had a couple of quibbles, but nothing major. I had very high expectations for the movie and I think Chris Weitz delivered. It just goes to show what you can do with the right director.
me: One more question. Have you ever played the game Fuck Marry Kill?
SusanAshlea: Can’t say I have.
me: It’s pretty simple. Just answer this question.

A. Fuck
B. Marry
C. Kill
SusanAshlea: A and B are easy. C is difficult.
me: Okay. *giggles *
SusanAshlea: It just goes to show I’m a lover not a fighter.

C, I think would probably be…Neferet from HoN. She is so busy being threatened by Zoey that she misses the opportunity to really be a true mentor, and Zoey’s abilities could have been a great asset to her. Instead she chose to go completely frakkin’ nuts, consort with an evil fallen angel and try to kill Zoey. Complete. Wackadoodle.
me: What about Fuck and Kill?
SusanAshlea: Marry and Fuck are interchangeable. Marry: Edward Cullen & Fuck: Wrath, son of Wrath.
me: Nope that’s the sitch, can’t be interchangeable.
SusanAshlea: That isn’t allowed? Dangit. Okay, I’m changing my mind then.
Marry: Wrath, from BDB. Because he’s the friggin’ KING! I have always wanted to be Queen of something.
me: ahh… every little girls dream…
SusanAshlea: And he’s very protective of what is “his”, his shellan, his brothers, his race. He is always going to do what is right for those he cares about even if it’s a horribly painful decision.
Me: And fuck?
SusanAshlea: Jasper Hale.
me: Oh. Yeah…
SusanAshlea: Because he controls and manipulates feelings and emotions. Imagine how good that would feel…that’s all I’m sayin’.
