Vampire Diaries Weekly Review

Season One, Episode 11 -  “Bloodlines” Recap.

Wow, a lot happened in tonight’s episode.  If you haven’t had a chance to watch it, I hope you set your DVR or get the chance to watch it online.

If you remember, at the end of the last episode, Elena and Stefan finally do the dirty.  Right after that, she discovers the picture of Katherine that Stefan keeps in his room.  Not something any girl wants to find after having sex with her boyfriend for the first time.  It’s no surprise that she gets upset.  I know if I were in her shoes, I would A) think it was creepy and B) wonder if my boyfriend were in love with me or a dead girl who happens to look exactly like me.

Elena doesn’t give Stefan a chance to explain, instead she jumps in her car and peels out of there.  As she’s driving home, a man appears in the road.  It happens to quickly for Elena to stop and she hits him and flips her car, while the man gets up and walks away.  Obviously, she encountered something not quite human.  Another vampire, perhaps?  Unfortunately, we really don’t find out any more about this mystery man.  I’m hoping it gets addressed in a future episode.  Of course, Damon is somehow in the area and rescues Elena from her car.  He must have been using his vampire senses or something.  Regardless, it was lucky for Elena that he was there, considering she was stuck upside down in her car and all.

The next thing she knows, she wakes up in a car with Damon and he tells her that they are on their way to Georgia.  This doesn’t sit well with Elena.  She’s rightfully worried that her car will be found without her in it and people will freak out about what happened to her.  However, Damon talks her in to staying with him.  But, she makes him promise that he won’t use his mind control powers on her.  I love Damon, but I wouldn’t believe a promise he made for anything in the world.  But, Elena is trusting, so she lets him drag her to some dive bar outside of Atlanta.  It kind of irritated me how concerned Elena was about people worrying about her and then she just went with Damon.  Hello, you just had a major car accident!  Don’t you think you better call someone to let them know what happened?

This isn’t old random bar – Damon has a friend by the name of Bree who works at this particular saloon.  And, Bree just happens to be a witch, who Damon needs to help him open the tomb holding Katherine and the other creepy vampires.  However, Bree tells him that it isn’t possible because Bonnie destroyed the crystal. When Damon and Elena go outside for a few minutes, Bree makes a call and rats out Damon.  Who does Bree call?  Remember Lexi?  Well, she had a boyfriend and he is pissed that she is dead.  He lives by the whole “an eye for an eye” philosophy and does his best to kill Damon. Elena intervenes and uses Lexi’s memory to convince her boyfriend not to kill Damon.  So instead of getting killed, he just gets roughed up a bit.  After that incident, he realizes that Bree set him up and must know more than she is telling him.  He confronts her in the bar and she tells him that Emily’s spell book will allow him to open the tomb.  After she admits that she doesn’t know where the book is, he kills her.  Typical Damon – I totes would never want to get on his bad side!  Is this the real reason Damon came to Mystic Falls? Has his intention all along been to free Katherine?

When Elena gets back to Mystic Falls, she talks to Stefan.  She’s hurt and wants to know why he lied to her about Katherine and why she even looks like Katherine in the first place.  Eventually, Stefan admits that he was in Mystic Falls the day her parents died.  He tells Elena that he tried to save her parents but that her father said he wanted Elena saved first.  After he recognized Elena’s resemblance to Katherine, he admits watching her to find out if she was anything like Katherine.  When he found out that she was the complete opposite of Katherine, he couldn’t make himself leave Mystic Falls.  He was also intrigued about their resemblance and decided to do some research.  In his research, he found out that the reason Elena looks so much like Katherine is that she is adopted. Yeah, I didn’t see that coming either.  Needless to say, this information leaves Elena feeling confused and hurt.  In the books, there is never really any explanation for the resemblance between the two characters, so I am really interested to find out more about Elena’s real parents.  But, I guess for all you viewers who were worried about Stefan and Elena, it seems like they might be patching things up.  Stefan told Elena that he loved her, and she let him comfort her, which is a good sign that she is over the whole Katherine incident.  She has bigger things to worry about anyway – like finding her biological parents.

Another plot line in the story involves Stefan and Bonnie.  Stephan approaches Bonnie at school in the hopes that she will be able to use her magic to find out where Damon has taken Elena.  Bonnie takes Elena’s necklace and tries to use her powers to locate her.  However, nothing happens.  Bonnie runs away upset; it seems her powers have failed her, and she needs to figure out why. She runs home to tell her Grandmother that her powers are gone.  Because Bonnie promised Damon and Stefan not to tell about what happened in the forest, she can’t let her know the whole truth.  However, her Grandmother tells her that in order to get her powers back, she has to deal with whatever she is holding back. So, Bonnie goes to the forest to try and figure out what happened to her, and she falls down a hole.  This isn’t just any hole in the ground.  It leads to  the tomb under the church.  Luckily, Stefan finds her and gets her back above ground.  Bonnie tells Stefan that she heard the spirits of Katherine and other evil vampires in the tomb, but he reassured her that since she had destroyed the crystals, they couldn’t get out and she was safe.  Of course, neither Bonnie or Stefan know that Damon wants to open the tomb, provided he can find Emily’s spell book.  Hopefully the show will take a page from the book and allow us to get a peek at Katherine.  We all know how that encounter turned out for Elena, so I’m really intrigued to know if she will turn into a vampire on the show anytime soon.

Another plot line involves Jeremy meeting a girl at the library and discovering there might me more to the old stories about vampires in Mystic Falls than meets the eye.  And finally, we get a peek at Alaric and his plans to do something bad to Damon.

All in all, I have to say that I was very pleased with this episode.  I think it really moves the plot along and gave us a peek into some big story lines for future episodes.  What did you think about tonight’s episode?  I would love to hear your theories about Elena’s parents, Damon’s intentions, and if Bonnie will get her powers back.

  1. I finally got to watch the episode last night and it did not disappoint!

The talk between Stefan & Elena was so touching. Was it just me or did Paul Wesley look extra smoking in this episode?

Of course I love Damon but was screaming at Elena for going with him…although, she did save his life.

Could the dark figure that caused the crash be Lexi’s boyfriend? I was sort of, kind of thinking it might have been…but probably not.

Overall, I’m really getting into the show…though it sounds worlds different from the books!

  2. First of all, second fave epi of the season so far (The Turning Point being epi number one, haha). Secondly, you spelt Stefan wrong throughout the entire recap. Not tryna be rude, but it was just bugging me a lil bit…

    Awesome recap tho :)
