FanFic Friday with SarahBella
It’s time for another installment of FANFIC FRIDAY (said in a booming announcer like voice). This week, I’m going to take a page out of SusanAshlea’s book and rec a PG-13 fic!! **GASP** I know, I know! Fic with no smut?!? Yep, it exists folks, and I’ll tell you what else – some of it is darn good!
The first fic I’m reccing this week was one of our featured fics last week, and happens to be a fic that I validate. Oh, and it’s fantasmic. Readers, meet ‘I’ll Always Have Paris’ by Penn Ames. http://myvampfiction.com/dungeon/viewstory.php?sid=142
‘I’ll Always Have Paris’ is a canon parallel fic in which Bella chooses Jacob. What makes it canon parallel? Everything else. The story picks up in New Moon just before the phone call that Jacob answers at Bella’s house. Says author Penn Ames,
“Bella’s and Jacob’s love was doomed from the beginning. Bella and Edward were meant to be. But what if, at just the right time, just one word had been spoken. One word. Sometimes, that’s all it takes–to change your destiny.”
Everything after that phone call is AU, but it follows the events in Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. The storyline is tweaked to fit Bella choosing Jacob. Victoria and Riley out to kill Bella? Check- this story’s got ‘em. Love triangle? Yep, it’s got that too. Renesmee? Oh yeah, she’s here. So, we have vampires, werewolves, humans, imprints and everything else you can think of from Twilight – even the fade to black. Sure, there’s schmexin’, but it’s done the same way SM did it.
The writing is descriptive and vivid; Penn Ames creates entire new venues for backdrops to this story. A cliff side road that drops off into the ocean and a tiny cave hideout in the middle of the woods are two of my favorites.
The dialogue is realistic and engaging; it sucks you in, chews you up and spits you back out and when you’re done you go, “Wait, that wasn’t real? Where did Forks go?”
So, recap – this fic has epic battles, love, friendship, Renesmee, vengeful vampires out for blood and your friendly neighborhood werewolves, as well as a few that aren’t so friendly. Oh, and the characters? Yeah, they’re all canon. How’d he pull all that off in one fic? You’ll have to go read it to find out.
And Nessie’s got a gift, but it’s not the one you’re expecting.
What does Nessie have to do with our next fic? Absolutely nothing! She doesn’t even exist in it! The second fic I’m going to rec this week is rated NC-17 (more my usual speed!). It’s called ‘Kindred Spirits’ by PhoenixRising. http://myvampfiction.com/dungeon/viewstory.php?sid=147&warning=5
This one is AU with an original character. In this universe, Bella doesn’t exist. Her role as leading female is taken by Theda, a hundreds of years old female vampire who grew a conscience on her own. She’s a vegetarian, but a nomad. She manages to settle in one place for a bit, but has no coven. Because she is vegetarian, she’s been able to assimilate into ‘human’ civilization much the way the Cullen’s have.
She’s gifted, but I’m not going to tell you how. She likes going fast, whether it be running or driving. She’s bold and insecure, confident and unsure all at the same time. When our story starts, Theda is just about to drop out of her current life and move halfway across the country because her gut told her she needed to.
So we follow Theda as she drives to Forks, unsure of why she’s going, where she’s going, or what she’s going to do when she gets there. The only thing she is sure of is that she needs to go. The sooner the better.
Theda’s history is completely unique. She was born in a part of the world untouched by SM’s Twilight, during a period of time also untouched by the original. PhoenixRising has created a beautiful back story that comes into play in how Theda relates to the Cullens.
The story is incredibly intriguing, if for no other reason than the simultaneous differences from and similarities to the original. In most AU fics, everything is changed (Edward is human, Bella is a vampire, Bella is hooking up with Emmett). In this fic, the entire Cullen Family exists as we know them, and PhoenixRising does a good job of keeping the characters in character. Theda is plopped right into the world that SM created with very few changes to anything else.
Now that I have no doubt piqued your interest, go read. Then review. And don’t forget to rate them, too; a rating of 10 = five stars.

GAH! So many fics and too little time but I just have to read these now. The Theda character intrigues me greatly and I can’t wait to see how an original character plays as the lead in the story. I’m always fascinated by characters with a unique background and I have a feeling I’m really going to take to the story.
As for the AU/Canon-Parallel fic (I love that description btw) I am intrigued by the theory that speaking one word can change everything. I’m also highly curious at how Nessie enters the story when Bella and Edward don’t end up together.
Thanks Sarahbella…your thoughts on both these fics were very insightful.
Sweeeet! Both of these stories sound awesome! I can’t wait to check them out.
