The best laid plans of mice and men

Mouthing Off with Meesh

We had plans for posting tonight, but because of a slew of illness flying through what must be the entire country, we didn’t have a chance to get together and discuss the things we needed to discuss. C’est la vie, right? I know Sue has been terribly sick for several days and then this morning I caught something that I never, ever want to have again, so here I am, trying to come up with a decent column to post because I really don’t like letting days go by without having something new at My Vamp Fiction.

The name of our site is obviously “My Vamp Fiction”, but there is so much out there in the paranormal fiction world that fits right in with the genre we all love so much, things that aren’t necessarily vampires. While I like the vamp focus, I never was one to limit myself with labels or to follow rules too closely. If I want to read and write about fairies, then I will. And if I want to read and write about monsters in the dark, I’ll do that too. As long as it fits the site in some way, I’m open to it. I also hope it helps some of our readers to branch out and find other topics that are as cool as vamps, but might not be exactly vamps.

I downloaded a new series of books to my Kindle. They are the Demonica series by Larissa Ione. I only got a chance to read the first few chapters of the first book, Pleasure Unbound, and I think I’m really going to enjoy this series. I hope to have time to read these books this weekend, if I’m feeling well enough to sit up to do that much reading. They seem more than a little hot, and I can’t wait to find out the premise of the series. I need more addictions in my reading world, right? It doesn’t hurt that they refer to demon hunters as “Buffys”, being the Buffy fan that I am. I’m hoping for strong female characters.

I’m also very much into the Dark Hunter series, by Sherilyn Kenyon, and please allow me to say that the Dark Hunters are every bit as sexy and enthralling as the brothers of BDB. If you’re looking for something new to read that doesn’t put you too far out of that zone, Ms. Kenyon has created this group of men that could melt the paint off your car. The hunters protect humans from Daimons, Apollites cursed to die at 27 who choose instead to extend their lives by consuming human souls.

Sherilyn Kenyon also writes The League series and they are damn good. Alien assassins, not vampires, who take care of the universe in a surprisingly humane way. I’ve never really been into space stories, even refusing to read The Host for awhile because of my aversion to alien stuff, but The League is a good series, consisting of three books so far. Sherilyn Kenyon is one of my very favorite authors, not in small part due to the fact that she tweets to her fans and she seems so down to Earth.

I also enjoy young adult novels like Wicked Lovely and the rest of that series so far. Excellent books about fairies. The Fever series (which we were supposed to discuss tonight) is a lovely set of books that sucked me in immediately. JR Ward’s Fallen Angels series also holds a lot of promise in my opinion. I can’t wait for her next book in that series, as well as for Lover Mine, the next BDB novel. Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, and the Merry Gentry Series by Laurell K. Hamilton are also excellent series for your reading pleasure.

Other books I’m reading right now include A Midsummer’s Night Dream by Billy Shakespeare. Love that play. My favorite comedy in his line of comedies. I’m reading some Isaac Asimov, a brilliant physicist, as well as Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, which is proving to make my head spin, but I feel like I’ve been immersed in the world of fiction for so long, I’ve simply forgotten how to read the really tough non-fiction that I used to love.

In case you haven’t figured it out, I’m kind of a reader. I love books, love falling into them, and I love getting to know the minds of these authors through their writing. I’ll continue to say this forever and ever, I really wish I could write.

  1. Jules, you should read some of my ever-so-fascinating research papers on neural pathways for pain. They are real page turners. :op

But really, thank you for being sweet. I’d still love to be able to write a good story. Of course, I’d love to be able to paint a portrait too, but that aint happenin’ any time soon either.

  2. I, much like Kari, wish I was only a reader sometimes- you know what “they” say…the grass is always greener.

That being said, Meesh maybe you aren’t a fic writer but you sure put incredibly interesting thoughts forth in all of your blog pieces. I’m always fascinated by what you have to say. So, in all truth…YOU ARE a writer.

I have so many fics I want to read along with other Vampire series and paranormal series, but I also have some other books that are completely outside of the paranormal genre that I want to delve into before too much time passes. With my days of unemployment solidly (and thankfully) behind me, I’m trying my best to balance all of my free time. Eventually I’ll make my way through everything…at least, I hope to.

  3. Zarek was a great book. Reminds me a lot of Z from BDB. The one with Wulf was my favorite. Until I read Acheron, but that book is almost too painful to even talk about.

It’s the fact that there are so many books that makes it such a great series. I mean, unlike with all the other series I’m caught up in, I haven’t had to stop to wait for the next Dark Hunter yet. Oh, and I missed the Lords of the Underworld, another excellent paranormal romance series. Now those are some dudes who kick ass.

I don’t picture Acheron as Fabio at all. Fabio is too much of a girl in my mind, and I see Acheron as way too masculine to ever look like Fabio.

Sometimes I really wish I was just a reader and not a writer, because I have a growing list of books to read. The past year I’ve been so busy writing that I feel guilty actually reading – like it’s time I could be writing…

  5. I’ve actually read a couple short stories in the Dark Hunter series: one about Fury and one about….oh fuck I can’t remember the guy’s name, but the female was Pandora and they were panthers…would totally read it if it weren’t 30-some books…

I’m so glad you mentioned the Dark Hunter series! I’m completely obsessed with the series right now! I just finished Zarek’s book and it was gut-wrenching and sexy at the same time. Is it just me or does anyone else picture Acheron as a really young version of Fabio? I know Fabio is so cliche but to me he just fits the description.
