What about Breaking Dawn?

By Jules

I know Eclipse has yet to grace the silver screen, but with all the films for the first three books completed, I am desperate for confirmation about the final installment.

Before I get into this, I should note that I am aware that there are some of you out there vehemently against the film being made and/or those of you that wish the whole series would have ended after Eclipse. I do not fall into either category.

I must state for the record that I enjoyed Breaking Dawn and how the series concluded. Sure, the pregnancy thing caught me off guard and the final confrontation with the Volturi left a bit to be desired, but all in all, I was content in the end. Probably the most aggravating thing for me was Bella referring to the hybrid child in her womb as her “little nudger.” Cringe. I hope they leave that phrase out of the film. Wait, I’m completely ahead of myself because, last time I checked, there is still no confirmation that the film will be made. In fact, the rumor mills are generating all sorts of “news” about the film that my overcrowded brain doesn’t know what to believe. There are rumors (that have been shot down on Stephenie Meyer’s official website) that there is arguing between Summit and Stephenie. There is gossip about the script being ready but no director willing to take it on. Finally, there’s that pesky little issue of one film versus two.

While all of that gets (hopefully) hashed out, I’m just hoping beyond hope that they can pull the film off without it being campy.

In the series, and in my opinion, Breaking Dawn did depart from the rest of the books. To me the themes were geared towards a broader audience, though it’s still categorized as Young Adult literature and, of course, we had that whole section from Jacob’s POV. The first time I read the book, I really rushed through it. I wanted to be back in Bella’s head, where I had become accustomed to being.

As with the book, I expect the yet-to-be-determined adaptation of the final installment to be a departure from what we’ve already experienced with the previous films. I wonder how things like the Cesarean section by vampire teeth will be interpreted. Will they skim over it (clearly there will have to be some editing in order to keep the rating at PG-13) or will they find a way to make it tastefully gory? Is there such a thing? Bella and Edward’s first time will obviously not be an issue to contend with, seeing how it was a fade to black situation anyway. And what about that Jacob POV section? Will this be amended in the screenplay to be from Bella’s POV? Will the screenwriter honor the original content of the book and switch mid-film to Jacob and then back again (I think it’s necessary)? How will the “battle” with the Volturi play out? And Bella’s transformation? And Renesemee? Yeah…I don’t think I will venture there today. That’s a blog in and of itself.

What will I be looking forward to once the film is confirmed? I truly can’t wait to be a guest at Bella and Edward’s wedding and an unseen observer of their honeymoon on Isle Esme. When I first found out about Isle Esme, I was tickled. Who wouldn’t want to be whisked away to a private island you didn’t even know existed for your first weeks as a new bride? Although I found the entry of all the different vampires a wee bit confusing during the latter part of Breaking Dawn, I am thrilled to see them brought to life on the big screen. I loved the taste I had of the Volturi in New Moon. I can’t wait to see them arrive in all their “pageantry”in Breaking dawn. I am anxious to see how Bella’s transformation, both physical and otherwise, plays out. I can’t conclude without expressing my great love for Seth and hope that they do his relationship with the Cullens justice.  This post would be lacking if I failed to mention the wolfpack and everything that happens with them, especially the split.  I look forward to seeing Jacob finally come into his own as a leader.

I want to know what all of you think about this too.

One film or two?

Unless they plan on making it at least a three hour film, I think it will be impossible to cover everything in the book in one, two-hour feature. Do you agree? I love reading divergent opinions; I really, really do!

Are you anti Breaking Dawn movie altogether? Seriously, I want to hear it all.

If you are pro-Breaking Dawn, what are you most looking forward to?

Until I hear it from the horse’s mouth, I sit here waiting anxiously for the final word on the film.

  1. I LOVED Breaking Dawn and I am on the 2 films band wagon. I don’t see how they could tell the story and do it justice in only one film without rushing through things. I am longing to see the wedding and Isle Esme and feathers flying but mostly the thing that stands out to me about Breaking Dawn is the change in Bella. And to completly tell or show her transformation they have to have Renesmee. We will know more when we see Eclipse. I have a feeling we may see some of Breaking Dawn at the end of Eclipse but we shall see. I am writing a novel right now and at one time in it my main character is wearing a Breaking Dawn shirt so I am pulling for it. I would be so dissapointed if we did not get to see Breaking Dawn on the Big Screen and get it out of my head.

I understand that a lot of people didn’t like the book, but I don’t understand fans that actually want the film to be prevented, when there are other fans of the the series who enjoyed the book & wish to see it translated onto the big screen.

Simple solution – if you don’t like it, don’t go see it. Frankly, if I hadn’t enjoyed the book, I would probably be indifferent about its release onto the big screen.

  3. As much as I disliked Breaking Dawn (which is odd considering all my fics are BD fics…….) I would be very upset if they didn’t make that movie. I think it’s necessary just because the story wasn’t originally complete at 3 books, it was complete at 4. Three movies doesn’t provide the fandom with the visual closure that the books offer. Where’s the resolution with the Volturi? With Bella’s change? Renesmee put to the side, we still would want to see some closure on those subject in film format as well, so I think filming of Breaking Dawn is a must. I’d love to see it, besides, I think it would be interesting to see how that plays out on film as it is so different from the rest of the books in it’s own little way.

I’m pro-Breaking Dawn. It think it would be a disservice to the readers and fans of the series to leave the movie adaptations at 3 when there is another part of the story to be told.

I honestly don’t care if it’s one movie or two, but if they do two movies, they should take a note from Peter Jackson’s book and film them all at once and break apart the movies later.

You raise a lot of good questions, and truthfully they are the questions I think we all have. Hopefully we will get some answers soon!
