What you should be reading right now

A Fic Rec by lexiecullen17

What you should be reading right now…

As I’ve told you all before, I read more fic than anyone else I know.  Seriously.  The fact that I have time for anything else truly baffles my mind.  Despite the hefty amount of fics already on my plate, I have recently started a whole new batch.

My favorite amongst the new fics I have started, though, is by far the darkest: LaraIsAwkward’s story When The Words Scream.

The story starts off with a very disturbed Bella being told to off herself by Alice (who has subsequently been dubbed Malice).  In the prologue, we see Bella literally hang herself before bed checks in the solitary confinement she’s been put in.  We figure out quite quickly that Alice is not a real solid character, but rather, a figment of Bella’s mind, the one that constantly tells her she’s not good enough and that no one will love her, harping on her insecurities until it literally drives her mad.

What a way to start with a bang, right?

The only thing I’d read of Lara’s before this story was her light-hearted comedy Rusted Cars and Court Room Polka, so needless to say, I was pretty blown away by the story.

That said, after I finished the chapter, I was literally aching for more.  I sat on my computer, begging the author for more.  And boy, she did not disappoint.

The first chapter flashes back to three months prior to the prologue, showing the readers who Bella was before her subsequent breakdown.  She seems put together, with friends and a loving family who support her, but her insecurities are prevalent throughout.  And although the story is a mere three chapters in, I’m so far beyond invested in this story it’s ridiculous.

Lara has managed to create a world so far removed from Twilight that I often forget that I’m reading fic.  Her writing paints a beautiful yet horrific picture, like a disaster that you can’t tear your eyes away from.  And I salivate for her Alice.  I often feel that Alice is the most underutilized character in the fandom.  She, out of all the characters, is the one that has been simplified the most from her original form—Alice is hyper, Alice likes to shop, Alice has a tendency to see things before they happen.  However, Lara’s Alice (or Malice) takes the other characteristic people so rarely use to create this hallucination.  Alice is manipulative, coercing Bella to act out and do things that she doesn’t really want to do.  Instead of “makeovers,” this Alice simply points out everything that’s wrong with Bella’s appearance, convincing her that she’s ugly or way below the standard of her beautiful best friend, Edward.

It’s literally like she tore the Alice from the book out and plopper her into Bella’s mind, taking the worst of the character we already know and turning her into this disgustingly enchanting one.  Even when you know Alice is evil, you still can’t help but want to hear what she has to say.

Besides Lara’s incredibly unique take on the characters and storylines, it’s beyond articulate, well-written beyond belief, with the perfect balance of angst, suspense, and appropriate humor.

And although it took the author by surprise, it didn’t surprise me to see that she had been nominated for an Indie Award for Best Drama/Action story.

So, I highly suggest that if you are looking for a new story to run your asses over to When The Words Scream.  I promise, you won’t be disappointed.

*When the Words Scream is rated NC-17 for very dark themes

I squeal, too. And every time she WCs with me, I make her tease more of it, hahahaha. Because I’m hopelessly hooked in the best way possible.

  2. I’m so freaking in love with this story, I do squeal when I see updates in my inbox, which doesn’t happen very often. There aren’t too many stories out there that make me literally squeal, and this one does. Loudly.
