Vampire Fans Anonymous

My name is Ciara.
And I like vampires.
Why is that a bad thing?
I don’t know about you, but I feel looked down upon every time I’m asked what I’m reading and I reply “Oh, I’m re-reading Lover Revealed by JR Ward,” or “Actually, I just discovered this really cool new urban fantasy series”. I even feel like I get a little bit of a funny look when I buy a vampire novel, or read one on the bus.
There is a lot of intellectual snobbery out there in the world of bookworms, and I see no reason for it. We should celebrate books for what they are, rather than judging them according to the genre.
One in five American adults is functionally illiterate. That means that although they may be able to read and write, their reading rate is too slow to understand the ideas on the page. That’s a shocking figure. We should be encouraging people to read anything at all, who cares if it’s War and Peace or Guilty Pleasures?
What bothers me most about this snobbery is that it’s unfounded. There are many truly brilliant works of art which revolve around vampires, and although there are also some trashy novels, the same can be said of any genre. If anyone ever argues that all vampire novels are trashy, just say one word. “Dracula”.
Ask anyone who judges you for liking Twilight or the Vampire Diaries or anything else what in particular they found unenjoyable about the books. I guarantee you 99% of people will not be able to answer because their blind prejudice will have prevented them from reading the books, and thus forming a reasoned and informed opinion.
Don’t buy books from shops where you feel judged for what you read. Take your business elsewhere, snobs don’t deserve it.
For those of you on Twitter, join me in sharing your #FridayReads. Simply tweet what you’re reading on a Friday, with the hashtag #FridayReads, and let’s show everyone else involved how great vampire novels can be, and how many fans there are out there.
And while battling this pointless narrow-mindedness, continue reading what you like, and tell the world. Let them judge, we know better ;)
there’s a good vampire soap opera detailing the adventures of a 1000 yr old transplanted spaniard in an eightteen yr old’s body and his newly minted 28 yr old consort. they race through the narrow byways of Philadelphia’s red brick old quarters with an assorted assembly of equally karismatic life-eaters and other exotic creatures (elves, cherubs, killer monkeys to name a few). Join them as they attempt to make sense of this strange predicament and preserve their souls in the bargain. I carry this tale on my site. there’s a new episode everyday. If it was a book, there’s already be over 350 pages…please hit—http://vampirewonderland.blogspot.com….and leave a comment or two….talk about yourself and your projects if you want…its all good…..
