As an avid reader of the supernatural, I am always looking for new stories and series. With the recent purchase of my Nook, I found myself cruising around Barnes and Noble’s on line Nook bookstore. Naturally my eye was drawn to the supernatural/erotica tab.
The Scanguards Vampires is a series of books that take place in modern day San Francisco. It is an ensemble cast of vampires who work for Scanguards Bodyguard. That’s right, vampire bodyguards. How original I thought. The ensemble includes Samson, the founder and owner of Scanguards Bodyguard. Amoury, second in command as well as Samson’s oldest friend, is gifted with the ability to feel emotions. Ricky, head of operations in the San Francisco office, is gifted with the ability to manipulate emotions. Thomas, the leather clad, motorcycling riding I.T genius, is by the way, gay. Gabriel, head of operations in the New York office, is gifted with the ability to unlock people’s memories. There is an assortment of secondary characters that weave quite the eclectic grouping, including Dr.Drake, the vampire psychiatrist.
After reading the sample excerpt offered, I immediately thought of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, a watered down condensed version, but none the less, the sexy vamps owned by The Warden. It sounded intriguing. They weren’t large stories, averaging 400 – 600 (nook) pages, and at $5.00 a purchase, I figured, why not?
After reading, the first chapter, I was immediately hooked! The characters are well defined, including their weakness’ and past histories. Their relationships with each other are a very believable comradely. Though they live on the fringe in the traditional sense, the sun will kill them, they drink human blood, super hearing and speed, they live relatively normal lives with insecurities, loves, hates, hurts and wants. You almost forget they are vampires, almost.
Aside from the erotica, which is very yummy and tantalizing, the story is chock full of humor, mystery, angst, and romance.
Samson’s Lovely Mortal is the 1st in the series and centers on Samson and his human mate, Delilah. Their initial meeting is hysterical, Samson mistakes Delilah for a stripper/hooker that he believes his friends sent over for his birthday. In reality, Delilah was running from a stranger and sought help at Samson’s door. And though the initial misconceptions are amusing, the passion and attraction between them is unmistakable. Their romance starts off very sweet with first date jitters, strong sexual chemistry, mistrust, heartbreak, and finally acceptance. And while we are treated with a passionate budding romance, there is mystery, mayhem, and murder going on all around them. The story is chock full of action and adventure, a virtual smorgasbord of emotions.
The story has an enjoyable, smooth easy flow. You will be addicted to these randy vampires wanting more. And like the BDB, the series continues and interweaves the characters and ongoing storyline.
The books are a definite recommend for a weekend read or when your in the mood for a tantalizing fix. Of course, hot sexy vampires are the ticket every time!
* Though rated 18+, I did not find the erotica offensive or over the top. The author’s erotic scenes were believable, tantalizing, and well written.
Indie Paranormal Book Reviews
My first thought when I finished this book was, “Wow! That was awesome!”. My next thought was, “Damn, there better be another book”. (And there is, yay!)The first line definitely gets your attention and it didn’t let go from there. …
What really drives this story is the romance between Samson and Delilah. My favorite part of the book was the main love scene between them. I think the author did a fantastic job on this part. More: http://indieparanormalbooksreviews.blogspot.com
