The End is Near

Breaking Dawn, the final and most debated book in the Twilight series hits the big screen with its first installment this coming November. Question: Is anyone even interested? I don’t know if it has to do with the people I’m around or the time that has passed, but, to me it seems the excitement for this next film just isn’t at the level of its predecessors. Have they taken too much time in production or does it have something to do with the fact that readers were disillusioned with the book itself? I have seen comments on Twitter about how people will not be wasting their money. In fact, I’ve seen more comments in that regard than I have in the way of excitement.
Let’s face it. Many books that are adapted to film leave a lot to be desired and the Twilight series is no exception. When every detail from a book can’t be included, there are bound to be disappointments across the board. But, in the case of Breaking Dawn I think it has less to do with the potential for a campy adaptation, and more to do with a split opinion on where the author took the series.
Comparisons to the final film in the Harry Potter franchise have been drawn, speculation about whether or not Breaking Dawn will beat the record. I’m placing my bet on “NO”. The anticipation leading up to the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II is on a scale I, quite honestly, have never seen. I just don’t see that happening with BD, no matter how strong the desire to see the final book in the Twilight series play out before our eyes.
But…
Is it just me? Have I somehow become lodged in a bubble, sheltered from the reality of the hype surrounding the “fairytale” ending of Edward and Bella?
From where I sit the thrill of what’s to come barely exists. The actors who have gained popularity through their roles in the movies have moved on to other endeavors having completed the shoots for Breaking Dawn. Has the fan base followed suit?
There’s no doubt that the Twilight franchise has blown the paranormal world wide open, paving the way for other series to have their own shot in the limelight in books, television and film, the impact undeniable.
I still have to wonder if it will go out with a bang or fizzle.
I still haven’t decided if I’ll go to see BD opening weekend. I’ll eventually see it, but it’s possible I’ll wait until it falls under the “$5 matinee” list at the local movie theater.
Eh, to be honest I didn’t really like Breaking Dawn much, but I will be at the movie for two reasons.
1. Kellan Lutz. Duh.
2. I can’t stand starting a series, and not finishing it, and that goes for movies especially. Even if I end up hating it, I will go see it in theatres and I will buy it so I can have the complete series on my movie shelf!
I have heard the same comments from various people. I think for those people who didn’t like BD as a book, the appeal of watching it on the screen just isn’t there, which I guess I can understand. For everoyone else, I’m just not sure why the excitement has waned. Perhaps it is the amount of time between movies and the fact that the fan base is in many cases growing up and moving on from the franchise. Whatever the answer, I know I will still be there opening weekend!
