Are You Hungry?

Are you HUNGRY?

Film adaptations of beloved books always have me proceeding with trepidation. On one hand, there’s nothing like a fictional world being brought to life, on the other…well, there’s huge potential for a let down.

Trailers are the vehicle through which we are given a glimpse of what’s in store for said adaptations.

Personally, I avoid gratuitous viewing of previews if I intend to see a movie; I don’t want to pay for something I’ve already seen in clips. However, I do like certain things a trailer unveils.

What does it unveil, you ask?

Cinematography. To me cinematography is vital to the mood of the film, it sets a tone that if captured incorrectly, can ruin expectations immediately.

Casting. Was your favorite heroine brought to life on the screen? The hero? The villian? Generally there is fanfare about the casting before trailers are released, but seeing them in a spot of the action can alter perceptions.

The Score. Music, especially the score, is highly important. It can drive emotion, suspense and make all the difference in a critical moment. Trailers give us a sampling.

While a trailer reveals certain telling elements, there is still much left to question.

What scenes from the book will not make it to the screenplay? What key elements do you hunger for that end up on the editing room floor?

Will the actors have believable chemistry and play opposite each other well, or fizzle?

What brings all of this to mind? The just-released Hunger Games trailer.

Did I watch? Of course. My first impression is good and my interest is piqued. I’m looking forward to seeing it play out on the big screen.

The cinematography looks spot on, the feel seems accurate – the make up and costuming as I had hoped for (case in point Effie).

As far as the actual casting? A trailer can’t tell me enough about whether or not the actors will carry the film in a way that will do it justice.

I’ve learned not to get my hopes up when it comes to film adaptations of books, the lower the expectations the better.

The truth is, how can anything bring to life what was captured in the mind’s eye as it comes to life off the printed page?

Just sayin’.

  1. I´m a big fan of The Hunger Games. I watched the trailer a few days ago and I have to say I think I´m going to like the movie, in general. I just didn´t really see Peta as that guy. I agree, going into the movies to see a book-based movie with low expectations is the best way. And we have to keep in mind the movies are BASED on the books,so some changes can/will be made. But I´m looking forward to Hunger Games – the movie :)
