At the Movies with MVF: Breaking Dawn

It has now been over a week since Breaking Dawn hit the theaters. As we started talking about who wanted to do a review of the movie, we quickly realized that it would be infinitely more fun to do a chat instead. So, Megsly, SusanAshlea and Saluki booted up their computers and hooked up on gchat to discuss what they thought about the movie. We apologize in advance for the random nature of our conversation, but that is just how we roll. Hopefully you will find it humorous – we certainly did!

Saluki: So, I couldn’t find anyone to go to the movie with me. But, that didn’t stop me from smuggling in my bag of Twizzlers and finding a row with the least number of annoying teenagers. I was excited to see the movie, but I also I went into the movie cautiously optimistic. To me, each movie has gotten a little better, so I hoped BD would keep building on that. When I walked out of the theater two hours later, I was very pleased with the movie. It definitely had its *eye roll* moments, but overall I really enjoyed it.

SusanAshlea: Cinematically, this one was vastly superior.

Megsly: I actually was kinda of excited for it. I’m not sure what got into me because up until a few days before I went to see it, I really couldn’t care less about it. Then I guess the Twilight bug bit me and I went, and for the first time left the theater without feeling disappointed.

Saluki: But dang, after three movies why can they still not get the wigs right?

SusanAshlea: Rosalie’s was awful

Saluki: so was Carlisle’s.

Meg: I liked Alice’s hair, and Jasper’s wasn’t bad. Past that…ugh…horrible.

Saluki: It just seems like such a simple thing to not screw up!

SusanAshlea: Someone needs to tell KStew how to act in love. I mean, it’s her real life boyfriend and she looks like she’s pooping her pants

Saluki: See, I think she did a better job than in past movies, not so much random sighing and awkward pauses.

SusanAshlea: After the first 30 minutes, right about the time she found out she was preggers, her acting improved, but she mostly sat in a chair and looked emaciated.

Megsly: I think she pulled off the trying to seduce Edward bit really well.

Saluki: The scene where she has on the lingerie made me giggle/snort. I loved Edward’s reaction.

Megsly: And for once, she looked really cute and genuinely happy in the movie. There was no constipation.

SusanAshlea: Yes, she did look happy. She just doesn’t do “in love” very well. But, there was a lot of purposefully funny stuff

Saluki: Speaking of the preggers – I loved how they transformed KS into looking so gaunt and sickly. She looked exactly how I pictured Bella in the books. It was perfect.

Megsly: SHE LOOKED HIDEOUS! I was really impressed with the special effects there. When she looked in the mirror and saw Edward behind her? I wanted to hug her. She made me feel (or better yet, the special effects people made me feel) for her.

Saluki: And the end, when she is lying there on the table and is all emaciated. That made me lose my breath. The special effects there were amazing too – Rob said it was a wax figure in an interview – very impressive.

SusanAshlea: I loved it when Bella woke up covered in feathers and then they showed the bed all broken.

Saluki: That got a huge laugh in the theater.

Megsly: A big no-no in my book – I couldn’t stand it: The wolves talking. I don’t know how else they could have done it, and I know that it accurate depicted what they would experience in their minds, but I hated the talking bit.

Saluki: Yeah, that was so corny.

SusanAshlea: See, I thought it was AWESOME and I’m not being sarcastic. I seriously thought it was exactly how I imagined it.

Saluki: I think if there weren’t the special effects to the voices I would have liked it better.

Megsly: I think if the actor’s voices hadn’t sounded so stressed and imposed, it would have been better. But Jacob sounded like he was pooping when he was like “I AM THE SON OF EPHRIAM (whatever it’s spelled) BLACK”

Saluki: lmao – Taylor does not do angry or demanding well. I liked how they did the imprinting scene too.

Megsly: Loved it. And they did a pretty good job of aging the kid up to look like a teen/grown up.

Saluki: I need to watch the movie again and pay closer attention to the smexing. All I could think of when it was playing was Rob talking about probing vs thrusting. He did some hilarious interviews in the lead up to the movie. So, the wedding dress. YAY or NAY?  I say YAY

Meg: I loved it.

Saluki: I thought it was perfect.

Meg: I think it was gorgeous, not so much what I had in mind with SM’s book version, but still perfect. Classy, elegant and that back was sexy.

Saluki: Loved the back. I pictured something way more old fashioned when I read the book.

Megsly: That’s what I was picturing. I was picturing TONS of lace.

Saluki: But to me, that wouldn’t “fit” Bella, ya know?

Megsly: True, the dress they picked does fit. I’ll tell you what, I’m glad I already have my wedding dress cause I’ve already seen similar styles popping up on all the websites I was dress hunting at. I have a feeling there will be a lot of Twilight-esque weddings in the near future

SusanAshlea: Loved the back, hated the front. I was thinking of something along the lines of Kate Middleton’s dress, with the form fitting skirt.

Saluki: I wasn’t impressed with the actors chosen to play the Denali’s.

Megsly: I wasn’t impressed with any of the extra’s actually, and as adorable as Boo Boo is, I think his acting went downhill in comparison to Eclipse. Maybe it’s because he had two lines instead of one, but he didn’t do it for me. I still want to pinch his cheeks.

SusanAshlea: Julia Jones rocked it though. She was honestly perfect, a good blend between bitter and confused.

Megsly: The movies have made me love Leah. I really wish she had an HEA at the end.

Saluki: I know – she gets the raw end of the deal in the series.

Megsly: SM should remedy that. Asap.

Saluki: lol – we’ll be sure to pass that on. I’m sure she will write it as soon as she finishes Midnight Sun.  So, biggest disappointment in the movie. A scene that was left out or altered too much?

SusanAshlea: Honestly, I think it hit all the right spots.

Megsly: I was really let down by the dream. I know a lot of people liked it, but it just seemed really out of place.

Saluki: I agree – I can’t think of anything that really disappointed me. I think they did a good job translating the book to the big screen. I loved the little extra after the credits!

Megsly: Um, I immediately thought of you two when that popped up. Especially Sue because of the whole Volturi.  I LOVED that Aro is a grammar Nazi.

Saluki: I floved that “First it’s the spelling, then the grammar.”

Megsly: And then the epic sigh. Poor Aro, he’s surrounded by idiots.

SusanAshlea: I thought it really set up the next movie quite well. I thought the movie was good, but I just don’t get crazy about it.

Saluki: I was really happy with Bill Condon’s vision and how it came through on the screen.

Megsly: Surprisingly, I think Eclipse is still my favorite of the three over all, but BD is the first one I can say I didn’t have any real concrete disappointments in. I really liked it a lot.

SusanAshlea: Me too, but New Moon was soooo superior to Eclispe!! BAM

Saluki: I wish they could have gone for an R rating because I wanted a gorier birth scene, but I understand why they didn’t.

Megsly: Yeah, I agree Heather. There could always be more blood. If New Moon were my favorite book, it would be my favorite movie. But the fighting in Eclipse is what does it for me. I hated the book, loved the movie, weird…hmm.

Saluki: I think I liked New Moon best just because it was my favorite book. But, I’ve appreciated each movie for one reason or another.

Megsly: See, New Moon and Eclipse were my least favorite books. I loved Twilight the book, hated the movie. Liked the New Moon movie a lot, and loved Eclipse just for that fight scene. BD pretty much hit me the same way the book did. There are things I didn’t like about it plot wise, but over all I think I’ve come to accept that I’m a minority in the fandom and I liked the book a lot.

Saluki: It’s hard to really pick one book totally, because without any of them, the series is missing something. I did just re-read Twilight for the billionth time though lol. Those books are great pre-bed reading.

Megsly: They are. I’ve been thinking about re-reading them. I will say this about BD, it made me go back and re-read my fan fics. I mean, I could not get my FF’s out of my head after watching that movie. I read both Horizons and Boxing the Compass in two days. I felt like a fan girl again.

SusanAshlea: I still say New Moon is my favorite. Honestly, I loved the books when I read them (and re-read them, and re-re-read). But now, they annoy me.

Saluki: I like that I can kind of shut my brain off and just read them.

Megsly: I think I’ve taken so long off of re-reading them (2 years now since I’ve read, almost 3) that I can probably pick them up and get obsessed all over again.

Saluki: I need something relaxing and low key to get my brain geared up to sleep. And, I can read them now and just overlook the flaws. There was a time I would just get annoyed, but I’m past that now.

Megsly: True, we all know SM’s over all writing was not that good. No biggie there, she’s a billionaire now, who can fault her for crappy writing now when we all contributed to her fortune lol.

Saluki: So, back to Breaking Dawn. It seems like the consensus is that we all liked the movie and thought was a good interpretation of the books.

SusanAshlea: I thought Bill Condon worked miracles. There was enough purposeful humor in the right spots and the effects were awesome. What I thought was hilarious was when they were at the beach and the boys were with their imprints…and you saw Embry and Claire in the distance. Everyone in the theater laughed.

Megsly: And you know, they did a REALLY great job of instilling real wolf behavior into the pack. I will say even though the talking annoyed me, the scene with them ducking in submission to Sam, and then Jake pushing up and making Sam bow to him? REALLY great job

SusanAshlea: I liked the voices because it seemed to me like they got it good about the whole multi-voice effect of the alpha.

Megsly: I think if they hadn’t over done Jake’s voice so much, it would have been perfect. It’s more so how out of place his voice sounded because it didn’t sound like him. I think that’s the one part Taylor didn’t do well on.

Saluki: I think it is hard for Taylor to sound tough.

Megsly: You know what else I loved? Kellan Lutz looking masculine. Cause he surely doesn’t look like a man in Immortals. End of story.

SusanAshlea: I loved the scene where the Denali’s were there and Mike Newton was like “they have to be related” their eyes were CREEPY!

Saluki: They were all creepy and just not what I envisioned in my head when I was reading the books.

SusanAshlea: That’s actually how I envisioned them.

Saluki: Ooh, and loved Jessica’s toast at the wedding

SusanAshlea: they were all good, especially Bella’s mom singing. Everyone was like WTF?

Saluki: I think the actors upped their game a bit as well. I felt they did a good job of bringing out the raw emotions in the book.

SusanAshlea: I agree, especially Edward. And when Jacob walked in after Edward first heard Renesmee in the womb? That was heartbreaking.

Saluki: And at the end when Edward was begging Bella to live – snot sob. I was really glad to see the range of emotions in the characters. I think we saw a different side of all of the characters in this movie.

Megsly: Agreed, Bill Condon did a great job. Taylor has really grown up as an actor. He did REALLY well.

SusanAshlea: I thought so too.  The stuff with the wolves was amazing, IMO.

From there, our conversation ranged into the truly random. I hope you enjoyed our version of “At The Movies” because we had a blast chatting about the movie.

And in case you are left a bit confused,
we gave Breaking Dawn an enthusiastic:

So, what did you think of Breaking Dawn?

  1. Pretty much agree with you ladies on all points. Loved BD and gotta say, it may be my favorite movie. Just wish grown up Renesmee was prettier. Maybe it’s because I have such an attachment to her since all the Twifics I’ve written are Jake-Nessie, but…*sigh* yeah, it looked like Mackenzie Foy if she was grown, I just think she should’ve been prettier. Not saying she wasn’t pretty, just not as beautiful as the books would have you think she’d be. Not sure if I’m making sense there…

As for the Bella dying/Edward crying part, I read somewhere that Rob was actually pretending it was Kristen dying, like, in his mind he was looking at Kristen’s corpse, not thinking about it being Edward looking at Bella. The “come back to me, baby, please come back” line was totally improvised. Broke everyone’s heart.

And Charlie’s speech was the winner for me. He’s so much like my dad it’s a little scary.
