Confessions of an FF Writer: New Year Edition!

A New Year… Same old Resolutions?
By Pemberly Rose
Welcome to 2012 everybody! I hope everyone has had a wonderful and relaxing New Year! I know I had a pretty great one filled with peaceful silence, fun dinners with friends and lots and lots of sleep. You really can never get too much sleep when you’re in college. Because really we all know what winter and summer breaks are for… to make up for all the sleep we missed during the semester! Between fic writing, reading, oh and studying and agonizing over details sleep gets pushed down on the list of priorities, especially if you factor in the massive time-sucks that is social media.
Anyways I digress to my point, with a new year comes the old adages of resolutions. Really, let’s face it we all at one time or another have made a New Years resolution. Our lovely SusanAshlea posted about her guidelines for 2012 in her column Soundbytes. What the real deal is that there’s something about the start of a new year that feels like a renewal, a clean slate to start again and make the proceeding 12 months different from the last twelve. There’s still the obligatory lose weight, give up smoking, etc.
In fact, the concept originated in Rome under Janus a mythical king in early Roman times. Other sources believe that even the Babylonians made New Year’s resolutions.

Yep ‘bout sums it up for a lot of us. Did you know on average only 52% of people actually stick to their resolutions? Huh, I expected lower!
I know, I know not another person talking about resolutions right? We all see it at work/school and in our families everytime the big ball drops in Times Square and we all sing a round of Auld Lang Syne. Well yes, but these aren’t just regular old resolutions. Nope these are fic rezzies. I’m on the home stretch with my own fic Life in Technicolor with only about 9 chapters to write left (which I have a small buffer between that and the chapters already posted). This brings me to my first resolution:
1. Write like the wind! My goal is to finish my fic and at least get some of the others bouncing around in my head some time to percolate in blinking cursor land.
Seems a bit lofty I know but I am going to need something to manage my sanity in the upcoming semester. I also plan to get quite a bit of writing done (maybe three or four chapters) in the next week and a half I have before school starts. Now how’s that for lofty? Hah!
This brings me to my favorite fics, of which I have a few. Todream, my fic wifey, has returned with a drabble fic called Dear Diary. Then there’s the standby Twilightcakes with Love this Pain and Sheewolf85 with Give Me a Sign and Blood Moon. And of course newer fics like The Wolf Prince by Blackimprint. I realize that yes these are mainly wolf stories or All-human versions but that’s essentially what I’ve become. A wolf-fic lover. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with this fact, I do miss my lovely vampires. Where did my tortured Edwards and Angels go? Thus I must find some! So goal number two:
2. Find a vampire fic that I haven’t already read that draws me in and keeps me hooked!
Now this seems like a lot of work and quite a bit of, I cringe even thinking about it, fic diving. In my vast amount of fic diving over the years I’ve realized that a summary and a title can tell you a lot about a fic and what you’re in for. A well thought out summary and title usually yields a higher quality fic. Now the lesser thought out titles and summaries by and large tend to be of lesser quality. Especially if the author states “I’m not good at summaries” and even more so if summaries is spelled with two e’s. These are generalizations, yes but they’re taken into account over lots of fic diving in my many, many years of fic reading.
There are also quite a few things I will be reading in the published fiction world as well. Having finished with book one of GRRM’s A Song of Ice and Fire, I have a review to write and let me tell you that book does not let you rest for a second, geesh! One big book release I am eagerly awaiting is JR Ward’s Lover Reborn, the next installment of the Blackdagger Brotherhood series.

Curious how Tohr’s book and Rehv’s book Lover Avenged are the only ones without a girl on the cover with the guy. Interesting no?
I gobbled up Lover Unleashed this past year which I quite loved a lot because of one badass chick – Payne. I can’t wait to see what Ward has in store for my beloved Tohrment. As much as I love all the boys, well maybe not all of them *cough*Phury*cough* I certainly have a special love of Tohr and the torture he’s been through with losing everything. Thus my third and final goal:
3. Read more books! Now I read quite a bit on my own and there ends up being a nice balance between fic and real books but this year I am going all out. Dystopian, sci-fi, fantasy? Yes please and more.
So what are your fic resolutions for the new year? Do you plan to get lost in different and strange worlds or go back to familiar territory?
Oh and one last thing…
