    Friendship, Now Online

Published by Jules under Just Sayin' with Jules

    banner

A little over a year ago I found myself unemployed and with more free time than I could imagine.  I had been doing the full time work dance for twelve years.  I threw myself into the job search and was stunned by the lack of response I received to my multiple inquiries.  I worked with one of my closest friends and she was laid off as well, at least I wasn’t alone, right? WRONG.  Three months after we joined the ranks of those without a job she moved eight hours south of me, but not before introducing me to the Twilight series.

Being Human, my newest television addiction

Published by Saluki under Stray Thoughts with Saluki

    banner

A few weeks ago, my husband asked me if I watched “Being Human”. At the time, I had no idea what he was talking about. He went on to inform me it was a “vampire show” on the BBC. Score one for the husband. I love that he humors my vampire obsession. I mean, he got me a poster of Edward Cullen for my birthday *lol* Of course, as soon as he told me about the show, I was instantly intrigued.

I was able to find it online and eagerly watched the first episode. The basic premise of the show is that Continue Reading »

What does music add to the equation?

Published by Meesh under Mouthing Off with Meesh

    banner

I was going to do a book review today, but instead of reading this weekend, I spent it doing other things – like taking my 18 year old for his first tattoo and driving my daughter back and forth to work. I did get in some reading of the book I’m going to review eventually, The Darkest Lie by Gena Showalter, but since I didn’t get to finish it, I don’t think it would be appropriate for me to try to review the part that I did read. I do think it’s going to be hot, though. That much we can be sure of.

So onto music. I didn’t realize authors had playlists until I read Twilight and visited Stephenie Meyer’s website. She lists the music she listened to while writing her books and it intrigues me a lot to think about how music can influence what we are thinking while we’re reading, writing, or doing pretty much anything. Writing Prompts

    banner
So, I’ve been doing a little something I wanted to let you all in on.  I have an app on my phone that gives me a word of the day and I’ve been free writing a bit each day using that word as a prompt.  Some of the words are incredibly obscure and it’s challenging to use them in context.  It’s really interesting to see what I come with when most of the words on my word a day are words I’ve never heard before (how many times can I say ‘word’ in one sentence without adding ‘to your coven’?). Weekly Roundup, August 16-21

Published by SusanAshlea under Weekly Roundup

On Sunday we announced the winner of our “Humans of Twilight Fan Fiction Contest”

    Check out the winning entry,

What Do You Mean by Changed, by Cedward

We kicked off Monday with our newest staff writer, Sassy, giving us his take on Tara Thornton from True Blood.

    This girl has some issues…

I mean first she has her coo-coo for cocoa puffs alcoholic mother. She was in love with Jason Stackhouse. She had an ongoing sexual relationship with her boss Sam Merlotte. She had an exorcism performed on her and she ended up in jail for drunk driving.

Then she gets sprung by someone that is supposed to be a social worker, who ends up brain washing her and makes her eat human heart in the middle of some orgy in her best friends house, all to summon some god.

And that’s just the first two seasons!

On Monday, Saluki also reviewed “The Vampire Shrink,” by Linda Hildburn.

Imagine for a second that you are a psychologist, just minding your practice and living a normal life.  Then one day, a girl claiming to want to become a vampire comes into your office because her parents are worried about her mental health.  You, being a normal, rational person, understand that vampires don’t exist.  That is just the assumption that Kismet Knight made the day Midnight walked into her office.

From that day forward, the routine life of Kismet would never be the same.  At first, she continued to believe that Midnight was being seduced and brainwashed by someone in the vampire culture.  Finding out there were more people like Midnight sparked Kismet’s interest.  Perhaps she could make a nitche by treating vampire wanna-be’s.  She could do research, get published, and maybe even write a book.  It doesn’t take Dr. Kismet Knight long to become known as the Vampire Shrink.

On Tuesday, Susan wrote a loving tribute to her Grandma Stella, who recently passed away.

Today is a very odd day for my column. Normally I try to keep my column dedicated to the genre or fan fiction or something of the sort. Today I’m going in a different direction and doing a tribute.

My grandmother, Stella, is probably the most amazing woman I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. This woman lived through the Great Depression, World War II, The Sexual Revolution, Vietnam and Korean conflicts, the 80′s, 9/11…she has seen so many things in her life. She was a strong Christian woman who, if it weren’t for her, my faith would have dried up a long time ago. She was an amazing mother who took care of her children while her husband was fighting in the South Pacific. She was frugal yet generous, and she never met a stranger.

TinyDancer93 was our guest author for “Wicked Wednesday” this week.  Her submission, entitled “What the Night Brings,” is a steamy encounter between Tanya and Edward.

She kissed me heavily, cutting my words out from under me. I began struggling, trying to push her back, but as her hands pressed harder into my chest and her lips became more heated against mine, my guard began slipping until I wasn’t fighting it anymore.

Feelings that I had tucked away deep inside of me for decades now were fluttering forth, and it scared me to no end.

    Primal human need.

I felt her hips against mine, her smooth leg wrapping around my own tucked inside my trousers, her hands snaking up around my neck, pulling at my hair, and her tongue slip out of her mouth, sliding into mine.

She moaned before breaking the kiss and turning to me with large eyes. I was panting, which seemed silly for someone who didn’t need to breathe, but I couldn’t stop.

I had never kissed a girl before. Well, at least not in my vampire life, and I didn’t remember from my previous life. What I did know, however, is how much stronger vampire senses were than human, and how every small touch, sound, movement was far more intense than it would be for a human.

“Let me be the one to give you happiness, Edward,” she whispered, running her hands down her sides slowly, mesmerizing me.

We also had quite the treat on Wednesday, as Jules interviewed Edward, aka “Ryeward” from Mac’s fic “Coming Through the Rye.”

For the record: When Edward walked in I seriously saw stars and thought I was going to faint.  I couldn’t help my eyes drift below the waistline and I must say, even from my quick glance I can tell you ladies the legend of BK is absolutely real.  Thank goodness Mac was there – she cleared her throat and made sure I didn’t make a fool of myself with the gawking. Without further ado, I give you Ryeward.

me: What’s your libation of choice because, I’m buying! You might need it to answer a few of these questions…

Edward: I’m drinking a pint o’ Murphys, lass

me: It’s on me…ready to do this?

    Edward: Aye

me: Alright, first things first: When did you first realize you had feelings for Bella? And how could you not consider that she would have feelings for you? It’s not like she could come out and tell you since you were basically with Senna throughout the course of your friendship.

Remember, readers asked these questions…don’t kill the messenger

Edward: Er, weel, I’ve always thought Bella was quite bonny. From the first we were guid friends. Whit’s nae tae like? She’s gorgeous an’ fun tae be aroond. Not tae mention I can talk aboot shinty and rugby wi’ her, and she ken whit she’s talking aboot.

On Thursday, we wished our very own SarahBella a very Happy Birthday.

We also heard from Meesh about her obsession with the Brothers from the Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

So what have I been thinking about for the past few weeks? I guess I wouldn’t so much call it “thinking about” as I would say obsessing over.

The Brothers. *sigh* For weeks, I have been thinking about these fictional characters constantly. In addition to thinking about them during my work day, and when I’m sitting at the computer at night, I talk about them with other Brother addicts. I recruit new addicts. I write about them, in emails and in this column. It’s as if my brain doesn’t care that they aren’t real. Technically all those actors we fantasize about aren’t real either – they’re made up characters, taught to carefully play their parts in front of the fans. Or at least that’s the justification I use to ease my troubled soul. You know, when I start to worry that this obsession is unhealthy.

As far as vices go, mine isn’t so bad, is it? I don’t miss work. I’m not ruining my health. I’ve made lots of very good friends who are as obsessed as I am. So what is the danger, the harm?

Affiliate Spotlight: Altered Lions & Sacrificial Lambs

    interview by SusanAshlea

Altered Lions & Sacrificial Lambs is one of the funnest Twilight fanfic related blogs out there, and we are fortunate at MVF to count them among our affiliates. These ladies are smart, funny, opinionated and they all love their lemons. Since they launched, they have developed one a wonderful following and it’s one of the best places in the fandom to get fanfic recommendations.

A few months ago, I was lucky enough to have a “chatterview” with JaspersDestiny and Kaylene where we talked about pretty much anything and everything. I also sent them some extra questions that the other ladies who work at the site were able to chip in on. We talked for hours, and the result was a 22 page interview. We are splitting it up into 3 parts, so sit back with a cuppa joe, put your feet up, and enjoy these awesome women from ALASL.

This interview is NC-17, so please don’t read unless you are of age. Kthx. If you are old enough to buy smokes n porn, please read on for part 2 of our awesome interview! Continue Reading »

    Author Spotlight: LunarSiren

Published by Saluki under Author Spotlight

    banner

    with Saluki

I had the pleasure of interviewing LunarSiren, author of Cauchemar Vivant, for this edition of Author Spotlight.  As you know, MVF auctioned off several Author Spotlights as part of The Fandom Gives Back.  GreatChemistry purchased this spotlight for LunarSiren, so we want to give her a big shout out for her contribution.

Cauchemar Vivant is a story unlike anything I’ve read so far.  Basically, vampires have taken over Forks, Washington and Bella is part of the Resistance.  She has been raised by Charlie to never, ever trust a vampire.  But, what happens when her life is saved by one?  And, when these same vampires can provide the Resistance with the help they need, can Bella turn her back on everything she was taught to believe?

If you read this story for no other reason that to enjoy a portrayal of a kick-ass Bella Swan, it is well worth it.  Unlike most fics out there, Bella isn’t a damsel in distress just waiting for Edward Cullen to save her.  No, this Bella would as soon cut off his head than let Edward save her.  Edward is also a darker character in this story, which provides an interesting change of pace.  The humans are given much bigger roles, so we get to know Charlie, Tyler and Mike better, and in a much different light than they are portrayed in the Saga.  LunarSiren did a great job of keeping the characters mostly in canon, yet giving them that extra twist to add to the darkness of the story.

The plot is incredible, the action is intense, and it has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the very end.  I really think everyone should read this story – it will open your eyes to the characters we all know and love in such a different light.

I had tons of questions for LunarSiren after finishing CV.  She was gracious enough to answer them all, and I’m excited to share them with you. Continue Reading »

    Tribute

I remember spending weekends with my grandparents; me, my brother and my two cousins spent more time there in the summer than we did our own houses. For two weeks every summer, they took us camping at the lake. They hosted parties for us when our own homes were too small. Our friends were always welcome, and she always had a big spread ready for us to eat. Each morning, we’d get our choice of bran flakes (because they keep you regular), “good hot oats”, or eggs and bacon. And don’t forget the coffee! Grandma turned us all into coffee drinkers at the ripe old age of 12 or 13.

Grandma taught me to drive in her 1964 baby blue Buick Skylark. She was my taxi drive, my Bible Study leader, my confidant, and my friend.

Yesterday, she passed away around 11am. She had been suffering from the effects of a severe stroke that she had on May 28th. She was paralyzed and could hardly talk. I saw her the day before I left on vacation and she chatted up a storm & even knew who I was without me saying. Aside from the slurred speech, she was herself: tart, sarcastic and bossy. I am glad my last visit with her was on a good day.

My family often joked that if Grandma Stella doesn’t get into Heaven, there isn’t one. When the doctor’s said they were surprised she hadn’t already had a series of strokes after the first one, my Mom said it’s because Jesus was girding his loins to make sure Heaven is ready for Grandma. We can now all rest assured that Heaven is in pristine working order, since Grandma Stella would accept nothing less.

My grandmother supported everything I ever did, regardless of how ridiculous it might sound to a lot of people. When her friends were scoffing at the internet, she welcomed the friends I made over the web. When everyone else was chastising me for choosing to study music in college, my grandmother was bragging about it. Yes, we argued. We didn’t often see eye to eye, but always knew that I should appreciate every moment I had with her. The older I got, the less time we spent together, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t appreciate each moment, even when we were arguing (a 56 year generation gap provides for many entertaining arguments).

I miss her already, but I know she is where she’s always wanted to be. She is no longer suffering, and she is with my grandpa and all of her Bible heroes, and one day I know I will see her again. In the meantime, I wanted to take this opportunity to share with everyone what an amazing woman this world is missing.

I love you, Grandma Stella. I miss you already.
